Gwen ‘shows’ you’re never too old to embrace new technology

Say hello to Gwen at Harper Fields in Balsall Common, who is enjoying music via an Alexa Echo Show.  Her Barchester Care home was one of 100 to win an Alexa Echo Show 5 in a prize draw by Music for Dementia and The Utley Foundation earlier this summer.

Sharon, the activities co-ordinator at Harper Fields entered the prize draw after seeing it promoted by NAPA (National Activity Providers Association).  The prizes included a grant for six months’ subscription to Amazon music.

Sharon said: “Our residents are having great fun with the device, even Gwen our resident who is 101 is enjoying the interaction and music. We were so grateful to win this competition.

Grace Meadows, Programme Director, Music for Dementia said: “As lockdown began, we became acutely aware of how many additional demands were being placed on staff due to COVID-19, and how the usual activities provided by visiting musicians had been stopped because of social distancing.

“We were so pleased to be able to offer Harper Fields an Alexa to bring music into the home in such a simple but effective way, helping both carers and residents to enjoy the many benefits and joy listening to music offers.”
