The Spitz

The Spitz was a renowned music venue situated in the heart of East London, was a beloved hub of artistic expression throughout the 90s and 00s. Today, its legacy continues to thrive through the establishment of The Spitz Charitable Trust.

Harnessing the talents of some of London's most exceptional musicians, The Spitz Charitable Trust employs the transformative power of live music to enhance the well-being of individuals residing in care homes, day centres, and hospitals. By reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness, this innovative initiative seeks to uplift and inspire those in need, fostering a sense of community and connection through the universal language of music.

We are thrilled to be sharing this exclusive blog from The Spitz for Care Home Open Week about the work they have been doing at Bridgeside Lodge Care Home, in particular how music helps not only people living with dementia but also their carers.

The Spitz have been working closely with Bridgeside Lodge Care Home in Islington for 6 years, regularly bringing high-quality live music sessions for the wellbeing of residents. In that time a relationship has formed between the Spitz team and the care staff, a relationship that has flourished and strengthened. It is built on trust and cooperation for the benefit of residents.

Care work is relentless, stressful and emotional. Music can provide a release for staff, whether this is learning an instrument or simply cutting loose and dancing with friends and colleagues.

“ Spitz music sessions enable the staff and residents to feel joy and to feel nurtured. To cherish the moments of connection that music brings. The music breaks down barriers and enables us to learn from each other every day.”

The carers with whom we have the privilege of working consistently go above and beyond the call of duty. As well as their daily responsibilities of dressing, washing, feeding and providing medical care to their residents, there is an all-encompassing ethos of respect and empathy.

Helping residents to really live, rather than to merely exist. To enjoy their lives, rather than to endure them. This takes many forms from helping them choose a new jazzy shirt or a fun hat to wear to a garden party to simply holding their hand when they are distressed or confused.

To the staff of Bridgeside Lodge:

We’re delighted to be celebrating Thank You Day on Sunday 2nd July as we continue to thank you, our friends, the care staff of Bridgeside Lodge every single day for your empathy, kindness and dedication. Bringing music to the residents of Bridgeside Lodge would not be possible without you.
